A female Japanese bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus kurumeus has just laid eggs in a bivalve Anodonta woodiana, and a male bitterling is releasing sperm. The male chases other males away to prevent their sneak spawning. In the first cut, the male successfully repelled the intruding male. In the second cut, the male¡Çs chases were not vigorous enough and the intruder successfully released sperm (40th second). See a separate video ¡ÆSpawning in a Japanese bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus kurumeus¡Ç for the detailed description of the spawning in the bitterling. The chasing male has reddish, nuptial coloration.
